that super storm could hit anywhere from north carolina to new england in the coming days. what all that means? all hands on deck. >> 11 news has team coverage of sandy's potential impact with rob roblin and david collins and we begin with john collins in the weather center. what are the latest models predicting? >> the main event is still a couple of days away so the weekend, we will see some of the effects but the real blast comes the start of next week. sandy has been downgraded in the past 20 minutes to a tropical storm, it's a technical thing. winds are down to 70 miles an hour. before they downgraded it, the winds were 75. it's a minor thing and it's possible the storm will pick up strength again. the center of the storm will run over the gulf stream which is warm water so sandy will fluctuate wind-wise over the next couple of days. the two elements of storm on the

radar, sandy, wide swath of rain from cape hatteras to the coast of florida and we have the other element, the cold front to the northwest with rains reaching from ohio and kentucky and tennessee. they all come together over us and we will see the first hint of this maybe tonight and better chance tomorrow and the real show starts monday and tuesday. more on the forecast coming up. >> with the devastating summer derecho fresh in our minds, people are stocking up on food and buying generators if they can find them. rob roblin has more. >> at clement hardware, people were lined up to buy generators. gordon clement says he sold over 100 generators in four hours this morning. >> people stockpile for storms like this. when it does happen, it's a good

day. >> are they selling fast? >> we are down to 150 and we are four hours into it so i figure by the end of business on saturday, i think they'll be gone. >> if you've ever lost electricity for a length of time, you know what that's like. >> pretty sure we will be without power and all that stuff. >> not worried about air conditioner but the freezers for a few days and they said it could be longer. >> down at wilson point park, folks were busy pulling out boats for what could be a bad storm. >> it's out and i'm going to put it up for storage and avoid the big storm because it may head our way and i hope it goes out away from us. >> i don't live on the water personally but none of my boats will be near the water so i ain't got no worries. i feel sorry for the people that live on the water. >> as soon as one pulled out their boat, another trailer was backing in.

these folks know what a storm surge can do. >> i've seen them last time and they were stuck to the pier on top of the poles so -- >> best thing to get them out of the water? >> yes, sir >> -- >> you got all that stuff? >> yes. >> elaine williams lives on the water in this beautiful home she rebuilt after isabel and lived in a fema trailer for two years. >> these chairs will have to get moved. they're incredibly heavy but they've been known to blow across the yard. during the derecho, they did. scared me to death. they weigh 150 pounds each. we are 14 feet out so we're not worried about anything here. >> rob roblin, wbal-tv 11 news. >> integ -- b.g.e. is planning for the potential of several thousand customer outages.

the utility has nearly 2,000 local and out-of-state crew members ready to restore power and they're already urging be patient. >> we cannot effectively and more importantly safely operate in wind above 25 or 30 mile-an-hour sustained and certainly gusts that are higher than that. the bucket trucks simply can't operate in that. the prioritization is we look to get the most customers back as as we can. >> b.g.e. is also reminding customers not to assume that they know your power is out. call 1-877-778-2222. >> governor on, -- o'malley is calling a state of emergency. >> our team coverage continues with 11 news david collins who has more on how local

jurisdictions are getting ready for this storm system. >> hurricane sandy, the super storm, franken storm. it has lots of names but one potentially devastating consequence depending on the path it takes. >> we do not know exactly what the storm will do but we know it's coming to baltimore county and will have a severe impact. >> the concern we have is the duration of it. >> the baltimore county emergency operation centers opens sunday. emergency equipment have been inspected. officials will provide county residents realtime updates through twitter. baltimore city emergency planners are going through a similar checklist. >> to see if there's gaps in coverage, to see if there's additional outreach that needs to be done. >> governor martin o'malley has signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency

>> now, your 11 insta-weather plus forecast with john collins. >> let's start with the here and now. at the airport, cloudy skies but thin clouds. you can see the approaching full out there in the western sky find of filtered through the clouds. it's the high, thin, cirrus clouds coming in on the north edge of what is now tropical storm sandy. temperature at the airport 59 degrees, humidity is up and we have a northeast wind at 7 miles an hour and at the inner harbor, temperature is 62. easton, 57 on the boardwalk at

63. parkton 67 as well as westminster and frederick. 50's and low 60's are the readings in the area. the 60's are temperatures really closer to the bay or in the city itself so cooler this morning than yesterday. we look at the satellite/radar combination. look at the size of what is happening. the actually storm, the tropical storm sandy is right here. just off the coast of florida, just to the southeast of jacksonville, the center of the storm. you can see it right in there and it's throwing rains on shore into the carolinas and georgia right now. rains mostly offshore in florida, 70 mile-an-hour winds but the storm extend into the atlantic and we have the cold front to the northwest and that will merge. the temperatures behind the cold front this morning, we are around 60. chicago is 37.

kansas city is 28. 24 degrees at rapid city, south dakota. the mountains are colder than that so there's a contrast in the atmosphere here and here's what our map will look like by evening. sandy continues to move north and could fluctuate between tropical storm and become a marginal hurricane and back to a tropical storm again as it moves north and makes a turn to the east and this front out to the west will be another factor in the weather. here's the track right now as we see it at the moment. sandy, 70 mile-an-hour winds at this stage of the game. by tuesday at 2:00 a.m., the storm is expected to be over philadelphia. it won't be a tropical storm, but the low pressure pressure center will be over philadelphia. it comes on shore over southern new jersey. the margin of error is from the mouth of the chesapeake bay up to long island as far as where the center of the storm could come on shore.

that's an awfully close brush for us overnight monday into tuesday. today, thin clouds. 64 to 69, the high, maybe showers late probably towards sunset or afterwards. east to northeast winds at 5 to 10 miles an hour. today, clouds, but we stay dry. by evening, rain bands pushing put into chesapeake bay. could be heavy rains late sunday into monday morning. the storm center is off shore. this is just one computer model of many and that computer model puts the storm on shore around cape may or so and look at all the snow in the west as cold air is drawn in behind the storm. tuesday, the storm moves into pennsylvania and more cold air drawn into snow moving into virginia so we look at our

insta-weather plus forecast, and we see we have temperatures in the 60's today, around 60 sunday. it gets windy and rainy on monday and tuesday, high chances of rains, 50's for highs on monday, the 40's on tuesday and the storm pulls out of the picture wednesday. >> the concern is that sandy could combine with a winter cold front and bring powerful winds, rain, flooding and a plunge in temperatures. >> it has area school systems around the state making plans and everyone wants to know if there's going to be school on monday. tim tooten has more. >> it was a peaceful scene at the annapolis city dock. there didn't appear to be a lot of concern about the approaching storm but that was not the mood at school system headquarters. at least one school building has been set aside for residents who

may find themselves in harm's way. >> i understand that annapolis high school will be open as an emergency shelter if needed beginning sunday so we work closely with them and other agencies. >> even though students won't be around over the weekend, the district expect power outages could affect thousands of pounds of food. >> we will take all of our food supplies, the milk, water and juice, and nov into our freezer. >> the concern does not end there. anne arundel county's head of technology wants to make sure key information at headquarters and at schools will be protected. >> we are going to shut down our school servers and computers in the schools down this afternoon to protect that and leave all of our main systems up tonight to do backups. >> in the meantime, school officials say they'll be sure to get the word out to patients on the status of the school day by way of the internet and

>> a two-story row home caught on fire last night in harford county killing a 5-year-old boy. it sparked roughly around 6:30 in the 1400 block of charlestown drive in edgewood. two other family members were home at the time but managed to escape without injury. there's no word on a possible cause. police in baltimore city continue to piece together the reason behind an attempted robbery and shooting around 8:40

thursday night near north and east preston street where police found a taxi driver suffering from a gunshot wound. it's reported the attempted robbery and shooting happened as the driver was making a pickup. police say two men ran from the scene. the victim is in critical condition. miscommunicated, that's what detectives are calling the story the woman who says she was sexually assaulted on the campus of notre dame university. earlier this week, the 19-year-old student told police that as she was leaving the library, approached by a stranger. school officials have been increasing security all week as a precaution but detectives want residents to know there's no threat to the campus or neighboring communities. >> an arrest warrant has been issued this morning for the mother of one of the two boys who admitted responsibility in the shooting death of 13-year-old monae turnage. the warrant accuses veronica alford of trying to cover up the

shooting and helping to hide the victim's body. barry simms has more. >> i think about what they did to her, i can't help but cry because it hurts so bad. >> nellie wright expressed the extreme sadness she and other family members feel because of her grand daughter's death. 13-year-old monae turnage was shot inside an east baltimore home. two boys, age 12 and 13, accepted responsibility. the older boy admitted accidentally shooting monae and was placed in a treatment facility. the younger, who helped move the body, is being monitored by the court. an arrest warrant has been issued for the mother of one of the boys. the warrant accuses 49-year-old veronica alford of hiding the a.k.-4722 -- 22 caliber rifle used in the shooting.

detectives say the weapon had been removed from the home and put into a truck owned and operated by the defendant's daughter's boyfriend. the warrant accuses alford of helping to hide th body. it says d.n.a. analysis indicated that the defendant helped lift the victim and remove miss turnage from the house in an attempt to cover up the crime. >> this is some progress or at least lets us know that the state's attorney's investigation is continuing in terms of the young lady's horrible demise. from that point, the family is pleased that things are continuing. >> barry simms, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a long-time voice wbal-tv radio says goodbye. >> effects has been felt in the bahamas. how the east coast is preparing for tropical storm sandy. >> first, here's a look at events around town this weekend. probably not be a hurricane but a giant storm. >> is that better? >> i don't know. see, that's not better. i'm not sure i intend to make it better or anything like that but nonetheless, the storm now is off the florida coast but you can see the rain bands coming all the way to cape hatteras and the cold front to the west combine and that's what gives this thing all this energy. will contribute to it being an immense storm covering the mid atlantic and northeast region. various computer models have various timings and positions whereas the storm might come on shore, the european model, most consistent and successful so far, apparently, brings the storm in on the jersey coast the delaware bay early tuesday. the g.f.s. and nam models are american models are a little sooner with a monday late in the day landfall further north

closer to new york city. whichever comes out, we are going to be hit with strong winds, possible flooding and periods of heavy rain and we'll talk more about when and what to prepare to do coming up. >> thank you, john. our ocean city is likely to be front lines of the storm. >> residents there bracing for tropical storm-force winds and heavy rains as sandy makes her way up the coast. sarah sampras an is in ocean city with more. >> officials and residents in ocean city are preparing for the storm but meanwhile there are still some visitors in town who are enjoying the nice weather while it lasts. a beautiful fall afternoon in ocean city and even though hurricane sandy is days away, a closer look shows the resort town is preparing for the storm. the department of public works has been busy. >> we are in our beginning stages of making sure we have loose items put away, things need to be stored are stored away, then we will start

collecting trash cans. >> the mayor is meeting with police and fire officials regularly to track the storm. the town is putting out sand bags and getting high water signs ready for potential flooding. >> we certainly have concerns about beach erosion. that depends upon the intensity of the storm. >> and as you might expect, home depot is buzzing for a friday night. >> plywood and screws for the plywood. >> plywood and sand have been flying off the shelves but there's one thing you won't see here because they're out of them. >> the big thing right now is generators. we've had maybe 300 requests in two hours but we have trucks on the way. we are expecting them by early morning hopefully. >> right now, the mayor doesn't expect people will have to evacuate but jim and sandy connell say they'll leave if it gets bad but hope it doesn't. their other house in connecticut is also in the storm's path.

>> it's more likely they'll be out of power up there than down here. >> no matter what happens, officials say they're ready. got a plan in place and we'll follow that closely. >> when the storm actually hits, city officials will close the boardwalk. until then, people are free to enjoy it. reporting in ocean city, sarah sampson. >> sandy his caused significant damage in the caribbean and is threatening to unleash heavy rain and wind in new england. >> hurricane sandy pounded its way through the caribbean today, ripping homes apart. at least 40 have died in haiti, cuba and jamaica. people are preparing for the worst. we can't take chances. >> in milford beach, connecticut, jim boarded up his

brand new home. last year's hurricane irene forced him to rebuild. >> you have to prepare. >> from virginia to new england, several governors declared emergencies and issued warnings. assume there will be a long period of time in which you are without energy. >> in connecticut, workers cleared streets of debris and in massachusetts homeowners pulled batteries, flashlights and emergency supplies off the shelves. voters took their prized safety.ons to >> today i'm protecting my interests and battening down the hatches. >> in new jersey, one boat yard couldn't keep up with requests. >> we are not able to take the boats out of the water. >> navy ships in virginia are taking precautions, too, heading out to sea heed ahead of the storm. along the coast, homeowners gathered sand bags. flooding is a concern as a high

>> now, your 11 insta-weather plus forecast with meteorologist john collins. >> good morning. quick look at the radar. cold front to the west, no snow involved in that. there is snow in colorado, though. so there is cold air behind the front and here's the rain band associated with tropical storm sandy. the center of the storm is off coast of florida. the rain bands are just off the florida coast, getting into the carolinas right now around hatteras. and also high, thin clouds are thrown our way, as well. you can see those this morning. the moon has filtered through it so it's all in all a nice morning here. let's look outside. 59 degrees at the airport. inner harbor, 62, humidity is up. the barometer is falling. it's 29.98. if you track barometers, it's falling which means the storm is coming. northeast winds at 7 miles an hour. the eastern shore, 57 degrees. at easton on the boardwalk, 63.

chestertown 60. 52 in oakland. so even in the higher elevations, readings are in the 50's. add the satellite to the radar, you can see the extent, the huge area the storm is covering. dry air has gotten into the east side and south side of the storm. there are clouds there but don't get picked up well by the satellite and we are only seeing part of the rain associated with the storm. there is rain elsewhere out there, as well, around the storm. now tropical storm sandy is drifting to the north and this cold front is trying to push in and of course we are getting in a squeeze play that winds up right here in the mid atlantic region. look at the cold temperatures behind the cold front. it's only 38 at st. louis, 28 at kansas city, 37, chicago. rapid city, 24. so really intensely cold air so the combination of cold air and tropical moisture, a lot of

energy in the atmosphere and when this comes together, it's going to be interesting. we have sandy, now tropical storm, likely, once it gets over the gulf stream, could return to a hurricane. we may see it switching back and forth over the next day, day and a half. but this evening the rain bands getting closer to baltimore although i think most of today will be dry. the hurricane track forecast has it a tropical storm until it gets off cape hatteras, then it comes a hurricane, category one, probably 75 to 80 miles an hour. as the low pressure center comes into new jersey, the the center point, the air or cone of possibilities runs from massachusetts all the way down to the mouth of the chesapeake bay, anywhere in that region it's likely to make landfall. 64 to 69 today, we should stay dry most of the day but by evening, maybe a shower chance. generally cloudy skies, sun breaks or thin spots in the clouds, east, northeast winds at

5 to 10 miles an hour. the future cast showing clouds today and rain chances by evening and heavier rain bands by sunday although the storm is still some distance away. the intense part of the storm waits until monday when the storm makes the turn towards the coast. this model puts the storm center into southern new jersey at 3:30 p.m. other models have it farther north and later in the play of the game so to speak but nonetheless we see cold air drawn in with snow out to the the west and the snow moves towards pennsylvania, continues inland and cold air drawn in to the south of it. near 60 tomorrow, and 40's and fitzgerald when -- 50's when the storm reaches its height. heavy winds, rains, possibly

11 news saturday morning, i'm jennifer franciotti. >> and i'm lisa robinson. the super storm could hit from north carolina to new england in the coming days and it has all hands on deck up and down the coast. >> absolutely. 11 news has team coverage this morning as sandy's potential impact with 11 news reporters rob roblin and david collins. we will begin with john collins in our weather center. all these models coming together now. >> that's right. as you get closer to the event, so to speak, the models tend to get closer together as to their conclusions of what's going to happen. right now, sandy is a tropical storm off the coast of florida. rains are getting up to cape hatteras. we are seeing high, thin clouds in our area, the outer bands of the storm coming in and radar shows the cold front which is going to be a big player in this, as well. switching over to the track map here from the weather service. sandy has been downgraded to a tropical storm, 70 mile-an-hour winds now but likely when it gets over the gulf stream, to

charge up again and become a marginal hurricane and when it comes on shore and this model puts it on shore late in the day monday or early tuesday in the overnight hours and the center line would be around philadelphia but anywhere from massachusetts and long island down to the mouth of the chesapeake bay is what the models are hunkering down on which puts us awfully close to the middle of the action but this storm will be so big, no matter what scenario comes out, we will see serious weather here. >> with the devastating summer derecho fresh in our minds, people all over baltimore are preparing for the worst, stocking up on food and buying backup generators if they can find them. here's rob roblin. >> down at wilson point park, folks were busy pulling out boats for what could be a bad storm. >> it's out and i'm going to put it up for storage and avoid the big storm because it may head

and they're already urging customers to be patient. >> we cannot effectively and more importantly safely operate in wind above 25 or 30 mile-an-hour sustained and certainly gusts that are higher than that. the bucket trucks simply can't operate in that. the prioritization is we look to get the most customers back as quickly as we can. >> b.g.e. is also reminding customers not to assume that they know your power is out. make sure you call them. you can report power outages by calling 1-877-778-2222. >> governor o'malley is calling a state of emergency. in advance of sandy's arrival. that gives the state flexibility in calling out the national guard. >> their number one job is to make sure emergency responders like police, fire and medical, are able to do their jobs. our team coverage continues with 11 news david collins who has more on how local jurisdictions are getting ready for this storm system. >> hurricane sandy, the super

storm, franken storm. it has lots of names but one potentially devastating consequence depending on the path it takes. >> we do not know exactly what the storm will do but we know it's coming to baltimore county and will have a severe impact. >> the concern we have is the duration of it. which would continue through thursday. >> the baltimore county emergency operation center opens sunday. emergency equipment including vehicles and generators have been inspected. officials will provide county residents realtime updates through twitter. baltimore city emergency planners are going through a similar checklist. >> to see if there's gaps in coverage, to see if there's additional outreach that needs to be done. to make sure that everything is lined up. >> governor martin o'malley has signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency in maryland, providing the authority to do a number of things, including activating the

>> now, your 11 insta-weather plus forecast with meteorologist john collins. >> locally this morning we have thin clouds out there, you've been able to see the moon filter through it. these are high, thin clouds running ahead of and connected to sandy. the actual rains are around cape hatteras and on south. the center of the storm is off the florida coast and is a tropical storm now, not a hurricane. cold front out to the west so we are in between at this stage of the game and it's like a vise closing in on you, that's the way it feels. outside right now, a pleasant morning. because the skies partially cleared, we chilled down and got down to 56 degrees.

now it's 58 at the airport, 62 at the inner harbor, 92% humidity, barometer down from yesterday, now 29.98. a north wind at 7, still pulling moisture off the atlantic ocean but also from the east but also now beginning to see moisture from the south. 58 degrees at ridgely, 62, salsbury, on the boardwalk at 64. 55, parkton, 57 at frederick, elkington, 56. an even distribution of temperatures across the area this morning. you see the wispy clouds, that's the circulation from sandy down to the south beginning to push into the area and then the cold front out to the west so you see the rain associated with that and and rains near hatteras and the east-northeast wind with high pressure off shore. sandy's bumping into that high pressure and it will tend to feed into the low pressure, the upper atmospheric low associated

with this cold front to the west and sandy is down to tropical storm status, 70 mile-an-hour winds but as sandy travels north and gets caught up in the gulf stream which is very warm water, it could return to hurricane status before it comes on shore and much colder air behind the weather system, another element we will see once the storm passes. today, 64 to 69, kind of where we were yesterday. generally cloudy skies, the best way to put it. there may be thin spots and breaks in the clouds here and there like yesterday but generally cloudy and shower chances look to hold off until later today, south of us, teest northeast winds 5 to 10 miles an hour. the winds picking up this afternoon on the open water, small craft advisories go up this afternoon, northeast winds gusting at high at 20 with a a two-foot chop on the bay. rain by midnight getting closer

to us so it looks like we are in good shape today to get ready and get chores taken care of before things start to happen and then by the time we get into sunday, the earliest of the rain bands start coming in, not too serious at that stage of the game. not until sunday night do we see heavier rains moving into the area. the eye of the storm puts it offshore monday morning when it starts to make this turn to the west, kind of unusual to see this happen but nonetheless, turn to the west so we get higher winds and heavier rains and by monday, late in the afternoon, according to this model, southern new jersey under cape may would be the center of the storm. we also get snow involved in the storm as it passes by. the european model is slowing things down and wants to take the storm into the delaware bay in the pre-dawn hours on tuesday and the two american models, the g.f.s. and n.a.m. put it closer

to new york, but earlier. either scenario, this is a huge storm. so we're going to pick up high winds and heavy rains, possibly flooding because of high tides, unusually high tides at the outset and the key days later monday into tuesday for that when we hit the peak of the storm. 67 today, 60 tomorrow. rain chances start tomorrow with scattered showers intense monday afternoon into tuesday morning. temperatures by tuesday only in the 40's for highs and things start to settle down around the middle and end of the week. >> it's really nice to have all this time to prepare but the concern is that sandy could combine with that winter cold front that john mentioned and bring about the powerful winds, pelting rain, flooding and plunge the temperatures. >> area schools around the state are making plans for the storm and parents are curious about whether classes will be canceled. tim tooten has more on this morning's education alert.

>> it was a peaceful scene at the annapolis city dock. there didn't appear to be a lot of concern about the approaching storm but that was not the mood at school system headquarters. already at least one school building has been set aside for residents who may find themselves in harm's way. >> i understand that annapolis high school will be open as an emergency shelter if needed beginning sunday so we work closely with them and other county agencies to make sure those preparations are in place. >> even though students won't be around over the weekend, the district expect power outages could affect thousands of pounds of food. >> at the close of business today, for example, we're going to take all of our food supplies -- the milk, water and juice, and move it into our freezer so it can be deep frozen for the weekend. >> the concern does not end there. anne arundel county's head of technology wants to make sure key information at headquarters and at schools will be protected. >> we are going to shut down our school servers and computers in the schools down this afternoon after school is out so we can

>> a two-story row home caught fire last night in harford county killing a 5-year-old boy in the 1400 block of charlestown

drive in edgewood. authorities say it's not clear if the boy died from smoke inhalation, burns or a combination. two other family members escaped with no injuries. there's no word on a possible cause. police in baltimore city continue to piece together the reason behind an arrangemented robbery and shooting around 8:30 thursday night where police found a taxi driver suffering from a guiterez -- gunshot wound. the 32-year-old driver was making a pickup. police say two men were spotted the scene.m the victim is in critical condition. >> miscommunicated, that's what detectives are calling the story of the woman who says she was sexually assaulted on the campus of notre dame university. earlier this week, the 19-year-old notre dame student told police that as she was leaving the library, she was approached by a stranger. school officials have been increasing patrols all week as a precaution but detectives want residents to know there's no threat to the campus or neighboring communities and the

investigation is ongoing. >> police have issued an arrest warrant for the mother of one of the two boy who is admitted responsibility in the shooting death of 13-year-old monae turnage. veronica alford faces several charges including obstruction and hindering a police investigation. police say turnage was shot inside an east baltimore home in march and her body was found the next day in an alley in trash bags. police say d.n.a. evidence shows alford helped move the body to cover up the shooting. >> coming up, a look at dave durian's not so final sign-off. >> helping area families in need this season. how the ravens and giant food plan to do just that. >> here's a look at events around town this weekend.

intense storm, it looks like is coming our way and as we get closer, it's harder to avoid the fact that it's coming. the rains are already up to cape hatteras. clouds, we're seeing high, thin clouds in our area already and we have that cold front to the west. now, how much rain do we get from this thing when it comes in? it looks like the hot spot will be late monday into early tuesday, pre-dawn hours. here are the latest estimates, the computer model we use in-house and it shows the rain coming in. the shades of yellow -- red changing to yellow are in the five to 10 inch range or seven to 10 inch range and hard yellows, south and east of baltimore, that's over 10 inches rain with this storm, not unusual with the way the storm is behaving and the amount of time it takes to go through. it's a long siege, not just in and out in six hours or anything

like that. we'll talk more about sandy which is a tropical storm for the time being, coming up in a minute. >> thanks, john. ocean city likely to be front lines of the storm. >> residents there are bracing for tropical storm-force winds heavy rains as sandy makes her way up the coast. sarah sampson is there with more >> officials and residents in ocean city are preparing for the storm but meanwhile there are still some visitors in town who are enjoying the nice weather while it lasts. a beautiful fall afternoon in ocean city and even though hurricane sandy is days away, a closer look shows the resort town is preparing for the storm. the department of public works has been busy. >> we are in our beginning stages of making sure we have loose items put away, things need to be stored are stored away, then we will start collecting trash cans. >> the mayor is meeting with police and fire officials regularly to track the storm. the town is putting out sand

bags and getting high water signs ready for potential flooding. >> we certainly have concerns about beach erosion. that depends upon the intensity of the storm. >> and as you might expect, home depot is buzzing for a friday night. >> plywood and screws for the plywood. >> plywood and sand have been flying off the shelves but there's one thing you won't see here because they're out of them. >> the big thing right now is generators. we've had maybe 300 requests in two hours but we have trucks on the way. we are expecting them by early morning hopefully. >> right now, the mayor doesn't expect people will have to evacuate but jim and sandy connell say they'll leave if it gets bad but hope it doesn't. their other house in connecticut is also in the storm's path. >> it's more likely they'll be out of power up there than down here. we're kind of hanging out hoping one of the two places has power.

>> no matter what happens, officials say they're ready. >> we've got a plan in place and we'll follow that closely. >> when the storm actually hits, city officials will close the boardwalk. until then, people are free to enjoy it. reporting in ocean city, sarah sampson. wbal-tv 11 news. >> sandy his caused significant damage in the caribbean and is threatening to unleash heavy wind and rain from virginia to new england. danielle lee is in calvert county this morning with more on what's going to there. >> hurricane sandy pounded its way through the caribbean today, ripping homes apart and leaving streets under water. at least 40 have died in haiti, cuba and jamaica. as sandy moves up the east coast, set to clobber the northeast, people are preparing for the worst. >> we can't take chances. >> in milford beach, connecticut, jim boarded up his brand new home. last year's hurricane irene forced him to rebuild. now he's hoping sandy won't do the same. >> you have to prepare. >> from virginia to new england, several governors declared

emergencies and issued warnings. >> assume there will be a long period of time in which you are without energy. >> in connecticut, workers cleared streets of debris and in massachusetts homeowners pulled batteries, flashlights and emergency supplies off the shelves. >> we have a generator, making sure the oil's clean. we have water, flashlights and stuff. >> boaters took their prized possessions to safety. >> today i'm protecting my boat and my interests and battening down the hatches. >> in new jersey, one boat yard couldn't keep up with requests. >> we are not able to take the boats out of the water. >> navy ships in virginia are taking precautions, too, heading out to sea ahead of the storm. along the coast, homeowners gathered sand bags. flooding is a concern as a high tide pairs with sandy's surge. >> it is all hands on deck. >> everybody is pitching in to get prepared. in chesapeake beach, maryland, i'm danielle lee for wal-mart

john collins. >> let's look at the radar quickly. the core of the storm, now tropical storm sandy, is down off the florida coast. rains are getting up to hatteras. we have a cold front to the west and for us, thin clouds overhead right now and those clouds are being pushed up from sandy. let's look outside right now. temperature, 58 at the airport, inner harbor, 62, 90% the humidity. 29.98, the barometer lower than yesterday. northeast winds at 7 miles an hour. a sampling of temperatures shows most of the readings in the 50's to low 60's. ridgely, 58, 55, parkton, same at frederick, in the 50's in far western maryland but they've had clouds blow in out this, too. you see the banding of clouds, that's being pushed up by sandy and we're still getting a northeast wind with high pressure off the new england coast and that east wind is also

introducing moisture, giving us cloudy weather the past couple of days. the cold front to the west, we're squeezed between tropical frontsandy and this cold and they're both coming at each other and we are in the middle like a vise colgd -- closing in. as far as the storm track is concerned, sandy is now a tropical storm at 70 mile-an-hour winds. it will track to the northeast, it looks like, may, as it gets out over the gulf stream, go back to a hurricane and as it approaches the coast, probably become extra-tropical, as they say, lose tropical characteristics, but it's coming into that cold front, gives it energy, so it will still be an explosive storm. it looks like landfall will be some time late in the day monday or overnight hours monday to tuesday and the center of this is around new jersey, the jersey coast, around cape may, but

anywhere from massachusetts to the mouth of chesapeake bay would be fair game for landfall on this as the models are coming together. 64 to 69 the high today, generally cloudy, thin spots here and there. shower chances holding off until sunset or afterwards, east-northeast winds at 5 to 10 miles an hour. rain chances staying south today until late, after 8:00 or so. sunday, rain bands coming through and winds picking up on sunday, breezier. the center of the storm offshore on monday morning, some of the heavy rain bands coming in so we begin to see serious weather with the center of the storm that close and winds kicking, by especially monday afternoon, monday evening as the center of the storm comes through. it looks like singer new jersey would be the primary that would get the center of the storm. that's north of us so we don't get the absolute worse but it's

close enough to give us all kinds of problems and cold enough that snow may be drawn in behind the storm. computer models are coming closer on the solution. it looks from the delmarva up to near long island would be the solution, anywhere from monday afternoon, monday evening to pre-dawn hours on tuesday and by tomorrow these two things will probably merge as far as what the computer models are predicting. as we get closer to the event, they generally come together on the same conclusion. 67 today, only 60 tomorrow. it's tomorrow that we begin to pick up showers, the breeze picks up. 56 on monday, gets windy and rain chances boosted by afternoon and evening staying high overnight monday until early tuesday. tuesday's highs in the 40's and things settle down a little bit by wednesday and we won't know what happened by the end of the

week according to what the sky looks like. >> early voting gets underway in maryland this weekend but it could be impacted depending on how sandy develops. the governor's office says it will determine if changes to the early voting schedule are necessary to protect the public but as of now, registered voters can begin casting baltimores through thursday, november 1. you can find the early voting centers in your precinct on our website, wbaltv.com. >> in the race of the white house, poll after poll showing the presidential contest is neck-and-neck and with the twice close call. some pundits think we could see a replay of the 2000 election. nikole killion sorts through the scenarios from washington.
